Bolt on mufflers are they all the same?

Post by Stumbows »

I've not got a ZX7R and am looking to replace the stock muffler system with a bolt on but I'm having trouble hunting down some good deals on the internet... I used to have a ZRX1200 '08 model which also had a bolt on to which I fitted a scorpion system and as far as I can see they are both of the same type 3 bolt setup.. Are they the same spacing? I've heard that other models of the kwaka are with the 7R but just not sure which ones because if I can find out it might broaden my scope on possible pipes to buy.

No, they are all different as they have different mounting points...the bit that attaches to the footpeg bracket to hold it in place..

If that's the only difference, then bolt ons like my 9er's Kerker might fit. They have an adjustable bracket that wraps around the muffler and can slide up, down or around. If this bracket/strap didn't fit, it would be pretty easy to make up another.

they mostly all have different stud patterns also..

It is quite easy to find stock pipes on ebay as many change to aftermarket pipes and have stockers left around..

I know that for bolt-on mufflers, a lot of bikes may have the same stud pattern. i.e. i bought a muffler via this forum that was marked as being for a mid-late 90's zx6-r. The bolt pattern and mounting dimensions for the end of the muffler fitted my rf900. On the same note my RF900 was reputed to have a muffler that was interchangeable with the bandit's of the era, etc..
