My brother got evacuated from his place in Railway Estate, Townsville. Their not so worried about the cyclone itself, but the ocean surges. They are predicting at least 6 metres and his house is on the beach and only 1 metre above sea level. I'm not one for praying either Rob, but this makes me want to as well. Personally, I don't get the excitment, I think it's scary as, and I hope everyone stays safe :(

Flinders reef is south (and thats where the wind is) and the highest all day was
167 kph at 2 pm :? :? :? :?
It aint as big as they reckon, and only the eye is going to cause any real damage

Media hype as usual...as to the size of it anyway ;)
Flinders Reef is north and south of the eye of the storm? :P

Seriously though, the media always blow this shit up out of proportion, but the gust speeds they talk about are for short periods of time and are used for categorising the storm. I don't know whether what you see on the observation pages in your link above are measured in the same way. Regardless I don't think I'd be too keen on 167km/h winds ripping through my place for at least 10 minutes like the Flinders Reef observations show, never mind the sustained 100km/h+ winds they've had for half the day. Not as newsworthy as 200km/h winds, but it doesn't really matter if your roof has been blown off and your house destroyed hey?

Last I red on the bom it was only ment to be 3m surge in townsville but like 6-7m near innisfail and where the eye is...
I may be wrong though
Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ...Holy shit...What a ride!
