HELP- Almost time for an upgrade and mauling over which bike

Post by AznCruiser »

Hi everyone,

Time spent on restrictions has ticked over pretty quickly but now that ive been looking for a new steed time has slowwwweeddddd right down...........

Ive been looking at various websites and listening to any bike sales recently, in search for a new bike. Currently ive been looking at three bikes, a 2006 Kawa ZX-10R (with 12k in the odo), a 2006 Yammy YZF-R1 (with 100k in the odo), and a 2008 Triumph Daytona 675. All within spitting distance of each other in terms of price.

Since im still on restrictions I cant legally ride these bikes around and test it, although ive ridden some friends one (in a private property of course ;) ) ive never ridden it in anger.................

So can anyone comment on which one is a better (including resale) bike to ride on normal roads and the track (doing track days every month till the end of the year at Marulan and EC)? I do like the slipper clutch and ride height of the Kawa, like the looks and seat height on the R1 and at this stage the 675 seat height seems too tall for me and so not as comfortable as the two litre bikes. Being a short dude, seat height is very important, more important that performance even (for these three anyway)..........................

Im looking at stumping up the money and buying the bike within the week, so any advice would be greatly appreciated..............

Thanks KSRC :).

100k  Too many kms on the R1 for that money tell him he is dreaming unless the 10 is cheap for a reason :?
ZX10 maybe but thats a lot of bike coming off restrictions and probably will scare you rather than teach you anything on the track if you have never riden one for any length time, but hey you could be a natural, it has happened and dont let me put you off it either.

675 good bikes by all accounts, what about a ZX6? its better suited for Marulan than a litrebike and at EC the 6 really isnt slower except on the main straight, but anyone can go fast in a straightline right ;) .

Resale? who knows probably the 675 being the same price as the others

I'd go with Jonno on this one mate, 100k's a lot of miles in 5 years, the 675 would hold value better than the other two and again as Jonno said the ZX10 might be a hell of lot to start out on, a ZX6 would be a far better choice! Whatever you get enjoy it mate and keep the shiny side up! :D

Yeah thats one of the downsides with the R1. Ive been trying to convince myself that like marriage, a bike will most likely fall apart early on in life, if somethings broken.

Id love to have the 675 to be honest, torque low to mid, thinner, more flickable, lighter, and maybe even got a better resale. The only thing stopping me is the height, id have to lower it to be comfortable in the street. I might just keep the lil two stroker for marulan and the thou for EC......yeah anyone can go faster in a straight line, apart from those on a lil underpowered bike :P............I find the speed differences a bit scary between my lil bike and those thou's on EC's main straight

Ive gone with the litre bike over the 6 because of the more torque, this should be more relaxing on the road when you dont feel like shifting, plus im finding that a 600 is slightly taller than a thou.

I have owned an 06 / 07 model ZX10, loved it.... both on the road and the track... I have never ridden an R1, but at 100k.. forget it.. I wouldnt even look at it.. :? But I have recently rebuilt an 08 Triumph 675 (for the track).. an nothing against Kawasaki, as I truly love them all, the 675 was the most fun bike to ride. When you get it all modded and set up correctly for you, it will be perfect for your transition off restrictions.

I really loved riding that 675, perfect for the track, I was fast on it straight away, I know it is a tall bike, but you will get used to it. The midrange boost is excellent for both the road and the track. I would be very keen to grab another 08 model just to play with myself. I am sure you could still find my 'build up' thread on this forum for my 675...

I think its been unanimous, 100k is getting up there for a bike.

The little Ap is already a tallish bike, on par with most 600 and I find closer to the 675 (going by the specs its a bit weird i know), im used to riding it at speed already and on low speeds, im sure the D675 would be the same. My main concern is comfort and having a pillion and going around on tip toes. Would a lowering kit affect handling that much? it seems like a taboo topic with any sportish bike. Ive never used a lowering kit to be honest so wouldnt know how much they affect handling.

Thanks Maccarocks ill look up your thread. Ive been see-sawing between the three for days now, ill wait for the D675 owner to take up my offer, if not then im going with the green army :).

If you're considering an older bike and want some decent torque, why not the 636 or even a GSXR750 K6/K7? Cheaper than the 675 and it prob won't lose a lot of value from now on... More torque than a regular 600 too. Prob the best compromise between EC and Marulan.

If you can stretch it, get an 09+. I love mine!! And the seat is not as high as the one on the R6, for example... can't remember what it was like on the 675 'cause I never owned one but I'm pretty sure that one was higher too.

Oh! And I wouldn't touch that R1 if it had money glued to it. 100Ks is a LOT for a bike that you intend to do track days on.

Trumpys are quite high at the rear,im a short ass but fit on a 02 zx9 with no probs.Tried a 675 and theres no way i was going to test ride it at 4.30 in the arvo as it was just to high for me.
I certainly also would not touch that R1,my track bike has 180,000 on her 175,000 odd on the road and the rest on the track, but this is a kwaka you are talking about not a skanky yammy ;)

Lol relax guys, im not going to get no skanky yammy..............i already have one of those :P.

Ive contacted the seller of the Daytona 675 and just gonna go with that................and live with the higher seats, id probably need to shave it though and maybe just drop it a tiny bit.
