Cam chain issue??
Hey
..2010 zx10r 12,000 ks on it...noise (sounds like cam chain) knocking when bike is cold..noise goes shortly after bike gets to about 50 degrees....was advised that not to panic cause it's just the tension progressing to the next tooth/spool and eventually will get backs it's tension...( sorry l am sure my choice of mech terminology very poor). Any thoughts?

Re: Cam chain issue??
My '04 ZX10 cam chain ate into the casing when it stretched. It has a manual cam chain tensioner on it now because the auto one was shite. That description sounds a bit iffy to me.

Re: Cam chain issue??
It kinda sounds like how my 6 did when it chewed a bucket but I havnt heard of a 10 doing it....Hope it hasn't Greg is it a distinct knock from cold start?Nelso wrote:That description sounds a bit iffy to me.
EDIT:If you think it does need a tension you can loosen the top and bottom bolts and listen for a click and re tighten

Cam chain issue??
The spring looses its tension in the 04-05 tensioners.
The chain will get a little looser just before it goes to the next click in the tensioner (it's like a
Ratchet, only goes one way)
If you are sure you want it one click tighter, pull the tensioner out (middle bolt 1st and push it out one click and chuck it back in.

Hey Dave..Yep long time no hear or see. Hope you are well..
. It's not a distinct knock...have had cam chain prob on previous bikes , and very obvious and distinct noise. I guess l will rock up ay dealership and get them to listen to it, cause still under factory warranty.Nelso wrote:My '04 ZX10 cam chain ate into the casing when it stretched. Thanks Wattie...As usual you have always given me sound adviceWattie wrote:The spring looses its tension in the 04-05 tensioners.

If l don't manually adjust myself....how long do you reckon it will persist until it goes to the next click in the tensioner, and is this common at 12,000 ks?

May be a while...
But zx10's were always known to be noisy in the engine department.
I don't think it's an issue. But if it's peace of mind you are after, swing by a dealer.

Re: Cam chain issue??
Another way Ive read of getting the tensioner to click out another notch is to put it in 5th gear and roll it backwards a bit with the clutch held in, then let it goDisco wrote:It kinda sounds like how my 6 did when it chewed a bucket but I havnt heard of a 10 doing it....Hope it hasn't Greg is it a distinct knock from cold start?Nelso wrote:That description sounds a bit iffy to me.
