The tracky has done quite a few track days prolly 10-12 since the clearances were last checked (apparently I have trust issues with mechanics ) and was wondering if it's worth having a go myself?...If not how much should I expect to pay?....I spoke to a couple of places a few months ago and got quoted between $400-$650 to have it done with the bike already stripped down (fairings off) if this about right?....Not in a huge hurry to get it done as the next ride day I do will prolly be the Xmas trackday
unless you are having problems starting the bike, or getting a noisy clatter out of the top-end - why would you want to check the clearances ?
Valve-clearances on late model (anything post 1995 for me ) motors is basically set and forget mate.
If you really want to do it, its not that hard just fiddly. If it was my trackie I just wouldn't be concerned unless the bike was showing symptoms of valve clearances that need adjustment.

Is purely cautionary mate after being my roady originally and getting 5k worth of head work done under warrenty at 5,000kms just want to make sure clearances and buckets are are well before it gets costly with no warranty....Don't want to end up like that grumpy ol carn Glenno....

The model had 2 different heads the latter with better oil pressure mine was changed under warranty was supposed to get checked 1000ks after the work was done but there was a bit of a shit fight with the shop as they thought I should pay for the valve check and not be covered with the warranty....Which I think is BS as it only needed to be done because of the head work .....Anywhoo they did do it apparently 10-12 track days ago before it was tracked and now I myself want to do it for price of mind ....
As I don't know what kind of moto you have so I can give no suggestions about your bike. Checking valve clearances is a very easy job. I just checked and adjusted the clearances on my 2004 z1000 and it was quite labor intensive as I had to remove the gas tank, the coolant tank and remove both cams to replace the valve shims, (more shit but to extensive to list). It was well worth the effort as I knew it was done correctly. The problem is usually not too loose valve clearances but too tight, as the valves tend to settle in the seats, especially with high RPM riding. A tooooo tight valve will allow leakage and eventually burn the valve so it leaks all the time. Buy a service manual and do it yourself. If you decide to do it yourself ask somebody about the proceedures, as if you have shims it is very important to do things right, which includes very disiplined removal and replacement. Jim Beam is the key to good valve adjustment. Cheers!
I'd get it checked Disco just so your happy that everything's cool with the top end. They wear buckets so you ll be able to check them while your there. Get Glenn to do it and you'll know you're not paying too much..Given the 600 revs like a bastard it's probably not a bad idea.
We found out what happened to Chris's after pulling it apart. It broke a valve spring, more than likely from over revving, possibly on downshifts. It went going into turn 1 so that probably makes sense, although I though the slipper would've taken care of it.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.
