to wheelie or not to wheelie....

For those of you who practise wheelies in the sticks or industrial estates, aren't you worried that if something goes wrong, no one's out there to help you or get help?

Just reminds me of years back, when one of my high school teachers didn't come in for a few months. He'd been riding alone somewhere isolated, lost control, ended up down a ravine with the muscle ripped off his legs. Couldn't get the bike off himself. Luckily someone finally came and heard his shouts hours later.

Wheelies are bad... mmmmkay?

(Even a 300+ kilo bmw will get on the back wheel with enough clutch and revs. )

given I have a fair amount of mechanical sympathy
its usually something I only do a few times when I first get a bike
and then knowing I can
...don't bother again
and
I only ever do it out in the sticks or the industrial estate
away from other traffic

I've been messing around trying to teach myself how to wheelie alot better, incase the day comes where I accidently do it (in a rush to get away, etc) I know how to control it.

I have to admit, I nearly came off the otherday, Not because of the wheelie as such, but I came down ontop of my you know whats!

I think to a certain extent you have to teach yourself how to do wheelies or stoppies incase you ever accidently have it happen to you, you'll have somewhat of an idea on how to deal with it.

I would like to learn how to do them, have only done one and that was accidental (See the "Wheelies on ZZR250" or whatever it is thread). If I can get them happening I will also only do them in a safe manner / environment.

i agree with a lot of you guys/gals.... Duane, very good point and what i believe is true. You gotta know your bike 100% and how it'll respond in various conditions.... if you ever have to brake hard and the rear comes up, gotta know how to land safely!
I reckon wheelies and endos should be on the riding exam!
also, neat to see that "landing" the farker came up. Never thought of that as an issue, it just comes down (harder when learning) and softer if you get back on the gas.....
all in all, practice makes perfect and a skill that you should have up your sleeve....

I don't claim to be an expert but have the odd try now and again - like Duane says, just know to control it when I need it. Used to hook it up on the crossers, but have a little more respect for the bike on the road.

Oh and Dan, I think your front may have lifted a touch on the way from Black Spur on the Tuesday after Superbikes.

Personally, if saw any moron doing a wheelie in a clearly dangerous manner I would happily confront them with a public accusation of intellectual inadequacy. Conversely a wheelie performed properly in the safest possible way deserves the applause and adulation of all who witness it. But I do think that saying "its OK to pop a wheelie only when it is safe" is kind of redundant.
