Re: OCD
Today i turned it over minus plugs to get the nice fresh oil circulating. put some fuel in a spare tank, fitted plugs, gave it a bit of choke and vavoom it started with a slight puff of smoke which cleared in a second and ran it a bit to warm up and get the oil every where. Operated the clutch a few times and that funny gearbox problem has gone. Im as happy as.
now just to balance the carbs and sort out some other niggling things and i ll be ready to register it. Thanks for all your helpand encouragement everyone, and particularly your wealth of knowledge Gos.

Re: OCD
Great news Dave, happy to hear you have got your rig up and running
re-jet should be pretty easy - just 1 or 2 sizes up on the main and drop the clip 1 position. If/when you go to pod-filters, you will have to wind in the idle mixture screws a bit to richen up the low-speed circuits. Years ago I had a nice little Z500 which had an awesome 4-1 fitted - when we went to pod filters, it was really hard to dial out the flat-spot just off idle.....even with pilot jets that had been drilled out and farking around with the mixture screws for *ages*. You could be lucky and have a set of carbs that respond OK to the pods ? See how you go mate, its easy-enough to just clutch over the flat spot off the lights !

Re: OCD
thanks for the kind words of encouragement Gos. Ive lost a bit of skin with the airboxes lately and im not keen to lose much more but will have to to get it running right. whilst i really like the look of pods im willing to sacrifice coolness and hand skin for "runningness" while i pursue the other items on the list such as rego , seat, paint etc, etc , etc

Re: OCD
these bikes really do work best with an airbox - some new airbox rubbers make this totally shitty job really easy.

Re: OCD
yer i was reading about a bloke in the states using 2" poly stuff that he modded to fit the box and carbs. Mine are a bit hard on the underside as to be expected but yesterday fitted up very quickly. thank f@##$% for hot summer days. speaking of which my mate called from sunny greenacre in sydney with 44 deg and almost 100%$ humidity whilst i was pouring a slab today at a cool 37 here in cooma. hope you fared well in the Kapital.

Re: OCD
started it up today and it sometimes wont throttle off or is a bit slow to decelerate. Checked and oiled the cable and it seem to respond quickly. Turned the handle bars to check the cable routing but it made no difference. Gave the throttle body on the outside a squirt of wd but it all seems to operate okay. Checked for air leaks by spraying wd on the intake manifold and airbox side and found none. When i bolted the inlet rubber on a put a smear of stagg to the metal bracket to ensure a good seal. Its an inconsistent problem that i thought may have been fuel delivery issues as it reminds me of my mower when it starts to run out of fuel. It idles okay, then if i give it a bit it wont decelerate, and then just gradually increases revs. Could it be the pilot jet under the little plastic stopper? Any suggestions?

Re: OCD
check the diaphragms for cracks or splits. A split or even a pinhole in a diaphragm (under the big square 'lid' on each carb body) can result in the throttle slide for that carbie 'hanging' and the revs just hang up there with it....

Re: OCD
just checked number 4 and it has a slight crack on the lip where it fits into the recessed groove for it. would this be enough? The crack doesnt go past the groove and the rest of the diaphram looks good under strong light. Can i use my daughters nail polish to patch the crack or would it need to be a paint on latex or PVA or silastic something. Might have to look into your suggestion from a while back on using the keihins off a gpz600 cause i doubt if ill be able to source any new ones.
