Tim - Gort was the big robotic sidekick in the 50's sci-fi classic - The Day The Earth Stood Still. Back in the 50's, the entire globe (well, the yanks mainly ) thought that the planet was in danger of being invaded by aliens. Google - Roswell 1947. So Hollywood cashed in and made a shit-tin of cheesy B-grade sci-fi movies. Some were OK though - TDTESS is up there with the best of them.

It is a great genre if you are any sort of movie-buff.
