ZX10R

Post by Benno »

Hey guys, just a few quick questions, mainly to other owners

What's the supposed top speed of the 2005 model? Is it restricted, and if it is, how can I remove it

About 285 to 290 ks in real speed, the speedo may read more but there optimistic (the speedo only goes to 299).
I don't think its resticted as only bikes that do over 300 are restricted.

Were are you going to need that anyway.?

I have LOTS of straight roads out where I live. Just gave it a tickle on the way home, hit 260, with it slowly creeping higher. Didnt seem like there was much more left in it though (rpm's were at around 10500). Just curious, as other people say theirs gets close to 300.

Mine also has the "race kit" fitted. Did they change any sprockets with that?

The sprocket in the track day kit is the same as standard so won't make any difference. As Madkaw said I think 290 odd is about the mark but it's a bit academic really.

Be careful at those sort of speeds though, wildlife can really fuck you up big time.

Cheers

I'd say it was restricted (186mph/300kph), I think all the litre bikes are now. But that doesn't mean it would ever achieve that speed, most mags can 'only' get around 180mph out of them.

A good way to tell if a bike is restricted is to do a run into the wind and then with a tail-wind, if the max speed is the same then it's prob restricted.

Aerodynamics are your biggest problem getting topspeed on the 10...there just isn't a lot of fairing to hide behind

Guys in the states are saying they top out at 186mph which equates to about 300kph

...anyway I'd rather go quick around a corner than in a straight line...but you have to try it out every now and then

It is an agreement between all bike manufactures that they limit any bike capable of doing speed ecess of 300kph. They did this as a self imposed thing rather than governments in the European Union and elsewhere handing down a ruling which would have been a much lower limit. Some country's it appears from a link below like the USA don't have it according to Doug Meyer.

Ok it appears I might be wrong ^^^^^ :?

Anyway, some links with interesting info.

A ZX10 mate of mine has seen 300kph indicated on his bike.

And, at 260km/h you are travelling around 72m per second.

In the time it takes Ben Johnson to sprint 100m you will have gone nearly 700m. Talk about "gone in 60 seconds"... you will be 4.3km down the road.

But think of the braking distance involved. By the time you see the Volvo leaving the side road you will have sliced it in half. A bird strike at that speed will take your head off.

I am not calling you an idiot for doing that speed (I am sure others will), I am just making sure you are well aware of the risk.

Just imagine what a birdy could do.

Don't take any notice of the speedo at that speed as they can be up to 10% optimistic.
Get a sigma bicycle speed if you want accurate top speed up to 300 kph.
You can't read on the fly but it does record top speed.

Now, according to masterbike testing the zx10r's top speed on the dyno (ie, accurate) is 283.3 kph....
The gixxer and cbr were 290 and the R1 301.7kph..

i hit one at 170+ (on a track  ) and as well as hurting the bird it splattered all over my fairing and leathers

Personally I'd like to join the double ton club (200mph+(320kph)) - the best that speed has been described is thus...

you are travelling towards a footy pitch at 200mph, at the far end is a sprinter crouched 10 feet (3m) from the end line. when you cross the line to enter the pitch the sprinter starts towards the end line. Not only will you beat him to the end of the pitch, he won't be fully out of the crouch!

If you think your 10 is struggling where it should still be pulling, check the usual suspects, plugs, air filter, oil (and filter) and fuel. I'm sure I've filled up on premium and the bike has felt like it has a lesser grade fuel in. All these would hold the bike back in the situation it is working it's hardest. Also, try and hold 4th, 5th and 6th out as long as possible to get peak power right where u need it when u need it
