rode in town today got stuck in the usual traffic jam. and like usual the temp gauge maxed out. but the fan didnt come on and then when i stopped and turned the bike off coolant pissed out everywhere. it emptied the resevoir. im pretty sure it isnt a problem with the system(pipes,thermostat etc.) as the bikes just had a major service.
the thing that got me was the fan didnt turn on and then the system emptied itself.
can anyone help me with this problem?

what happened at the service?
did they drain/replace the coolant?
coz it sounds like the system had air in it
air in the cooling system can create a superhot gas area
somewhere
basically the engine boils and the fan won't come on (coz its sensor is cool)
damage?

it was a major service at kawasaki newcastle
major service and a new rear pilot power $1100ish
so i assume they redid the coolant system
the bikes been dropped (stupid fat drunk driving bitch) on the left hand side but kawasaki newcastle checked it out and said only cosmetic damage.
i had a similar problem on a b model zx9r. replaced the water pump and seals . not sure if it worked cos i upgraded to a c-model asap and sold the bike.
ill give kawasaki newcastle a call and ask if they did change the coolant

Do you have a receipt with the work that they done ?
What Smitty said plus maybe check that the fan switch is connected, take the rubber cap off the bleeder nut & undo till coolant comes out(get any air out). Also check coolant tank not overful. Have a look at radiator cap(condition) etc.
All the basics really but better to cover all your bases.

Had similar problem with my Spada boiling recently- turned out two things were stuffed-radiator cap and temp sensor that turned the fan on. Almost like a design fault- the fan is designed to come on at 100 degrees- coindentally the SAME temperature as your bike BOILS when your radiator cap isn't sealing (if you have pure water in your radiator-coolant is supposed to raise the boiling point as well) ......
If your radiator cap works as it should and it holds the pressure it should, it might raise the boiling temp of the coolant to 120 degrees or so....
I checked and my CB400 runs the same temp switch for the fan as my Spada- I thought I might score another sensor off my spare radiator I bought (ebay) for the Spada- turns out it was stuffed too.... $80 later at Honda and I had a new sensor. $50 for a radiator cap- lucky you can get aftermarket ones of those for $15.....
