Yes and no - the thing to remember is that this was a major highside and she had some other pretty serious injuries including two broken arms! The PLACE where the break happened was attributed to the back protector, but had she not been wearing one at all chances are the injuries could have been worse.A friends broke a vertebra(maybe more than one) when she high sided in a track with the back protector on. Yes, the back protector caused the damage.

back protector
cheers guys
A point was brought up about the cheaper ones v ones like dianese
I bought the dainese one cause they fit better.
When standing up the Dainese one forms to your back where the cheaper R-Jays one (I think) would have a big gap between it and your back.
The dainese can bend both ways where the othe only bend one way.
Small difference but last time i checked my back can bend both ways and is not dead straight

Same shoould go for your leathers.....I tried on a few in the $1000 mark then tried a Dainese $2000.............. perfect fit!
I'l take that please. Thanks.
Don't really think it should come on price or colour, go for fit I reckon. Oh yeh, wear it over your shirt!

I have a hard, jointed back protector in a pocket in the back of my rjays jacket... was just wondering if that is the sort of thing y'all are talking about or if I should look into getting one of the strap on ones? Cheers -J.

Jamie it all depends on if you think its going to be sitting in the right place when you need it to be there, I pulled the ones in my jackets out because they where basically 10mm thick foam, I supose its the thought that counts and i couldnt see them helping much but if they where the ridgy didge items i would have left them there.
So if you reckon the hard back plate is till going to be there because the jacket is zipped to leathers or some other unusual force of nature stick with it or if you feel that it may infact slide up aound your armpit instead of protecting your back lash out on a strap on model.
Just remember if your riding to put it on.
I am probably guilty of the last comment my back protector doesnt fit easily under my trousers so i tend to forget about it a bit so good fit under your gear is important.
or you can do what captain strapon does and wear it over the top.

If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

Yeah, it's not a full length one, it sits in a pocket in the back of my jacket and covers from the waistband of the jacket and up to my shoulder blades. Good enough, or should I get a better one? I mean, what's it supposed to cover? Am planning to buy a new jacket soon, so all this could change.
I think I'd look like a ninja turtle if I wore a strap-on suit over my gear. -J.

Well You couldnt describe me as petite but some peoples spines stick out of their back a fair way so chances are if they go sliding on their back it will be their vertebrae they are sliding on so its suposed to stop them wearing out on the bitumen and also work as a cushion if you land/bang them into a solid object (fence/gaurdrail /tree/whitepost) and spread the impct across a large area.
Some have plenty of padding in them and do this well some of the dirt bike ones are all plastic and no cushion.
We have to wear them in 35degree heat in summer too.
