I use hand cleaner as a tyre lube- not the abrasive type though. Cardboard as rim protectors.

.....you can use a little soapy water for helping to fit & seal the bead. You can also use Armoall. Anything slippry will do the job......

+100. Don't spend money on expensive stuff - I just use a bit of dishwashing detergent in a cup, and run this around the bead with a small brush - 1" paintbrush is perfect. Our local tyre bloke used this method for the last 30+ years, works just fine.

If you mount your tyres....do you end up with lots of little wheel barrow tyre offspring?

Finally did it. I made a bead breaker like the video showed and used liquid soap as suggested.
All went well. It took a total of about 1 hour including Jim Beam breaks. It was a lot easier than I had thought. Thanks for all the suggestions and the video was very helpful. The plug I had put in to fix the nail hole was making me very nervous. Cheers! For you youngsters; Jim Beam makes every job easier.

Amen to that !! having a quiet JB&C while working on bikes sure helps me settle if things are not going to plan.

I hope you don't put the wheel disc down like that guy did. I'm guessing you'd still need to use levers to get the old tyre off anyway.

It was a bare rim straight from the wreckers and I sat it up on 2 - 3X2 blocks about 2 foot long.it worked a treat, I thought I would give a crack for a bit of fun and it was far easier than expected.
