I used to drive by the Harley Factory in Milwaukee every month...

You guys that think that noise is life insurance are killing me. That is a old Harley justification,,,,,,because those guys throw straight pipes on thier machine so they can make the scene. They gain almost zilch HP and probably lose it. I have two bikes at the moment, a very quiet BMW K1200LT, and a ZX-10R. The 10R has a semi loud throaty aftermarket exhaust, because that gave me five HP. I love that bike I still have the servo exhaust valve connected and its only loud when I'm wide open throttle.
Going down the road on the biggest BMW is awesome, its so nice and smooth and quiet, I listen to CD's throught the outside speakers sometimes, and I cruise semi fast on this machine (around 90-100 mph) very very quiet. And when I get into trouble or even the first sign of someone not paying attention I use the secret weapon...........I blow the loudest horn on a motorcycle. That Horn is so loud it'll make a baby cry. You want to talk about getting a morons attention, It gets the Harley Duffus's attention, I had a Harley guy blow by me and as soon as he was next to me he reved his un muffled exhaust and smiled while I let him pass me, I let him sit in front of me for about 10 seconds then I snuck up on his sorry arse and blew my HORN, that freaking guy wet himself I know, then I crused about 110 mph cuz I knew his HOG couldn't make it pass 95.

Bottom line yeah your noisey exhaust is probably a little safer because you do get noticed...... At the expense of pissing the niegbors off

why, it would be almost as loud and offensive as my Yoshi-equipped ZX12 as I blow by every BMW made, in 4th gear, at 130mph *bwaahahahahahah* evil cackle.......

one thing I cannot possibly disagree on, is the standard BMW horn.......yes, it is the loudest horn known to mankind ( well, this side of a Kenworth anyway...) - and they really should be banned because of the busted eardrums they cause car drivers with open windows they are a danger and a menace to society....

If ya pipe is loud enuff, and revs are high enuff, they will hear ya comin'. No matter which way ur exhaust is pointing. I always ride a gear lower than normal.

Both, this is one place you can have your cake and eat it too.
Lighter breathe better, as long as you check jetting, and noise, lessons learnt over the years it is good to have some road presence!

most aftermarket pipes on sports bikes are far from in the same league of offenciveness as a harley with straight thru pipes... cept for a TLR with a full yoshi system i once heard, that was much like a harley

but when redlined any sports bike can piss the neighbours off


older bikes tend to make more noise as standard, but newer bikes sound like golf carts, and cruising next to one you just dont hear it...where with a pipe, just cruising at 3-4k most drivers will hear it enough to bother doing a proper head check before merging into you


gotta say my 9R's horn is pretty homo, but if it has a tone adjustment screw on it i might be able to get it a bit better

thats why you do what i did and change it to single exhaust.

bike is running so much better now, still got original jets, just had to re float the carbie and put the air box back on as we had stacks on it.

swapped from standard cans to twin Madaz cans on the zzr600, the bike pulled away easier from lower revs.
The effect on other road users was instant cagers in particuler, noticed more head checks from them especially on the freeways

I looked into getting a new zorst for my ZZR 250, the 2into1 setup was cheaper @ 550-600 (local bike shop then told me that one was illegal) and a set of 2 pipes was about 700. I wanted to get a 2-1 Muzzy setup but my NSW leads lead me nowhere, but i did find these pics of a guy in melbourne who has a muzzy on an EX250 (GPX ZZR) motor. Does anyone know if they are legal in NSW?

I'd say the whole sticker thing. wallet rape if you buy OEM, wallet rape if you get an excessively loud pipe that plainly is too loud & that also doesnt have the sticker tax (hell even if it does have the sticker they can nab you if they think its too loud).

I got comments along the "why did you bother" for the GPX, but im not planning on selling the puppy for a few years at the very least, so why not enjoy it? There's also the side benefit that cars actually take notice of me that little bit more too!

well i have a 2 into 1 set up on my gpxr import and i havent had any problems, the only problems was setting the carbies up correctly so it ran smooth, and noise which i fixed with a new pipe. as far as i know they are legal as long as they dont go over 93 or 96 decibels and you have the adr compliance sticker ( i still dont ahve one of those and i havent had any trouble) basicly i changed mine from 2 to 1 becuase my bro tended to drop the bike on the left and was sick of replaceing teh can so we put it on the right.

new pipe, a fair bit quieter guessing around 98-100 decibels at 4800rpm

just ignore the decorations they were for teh toy run in wollongong.
