Update: Appears my cooling problems aren't my water pump alas

Saddy is because if it was I would be able to fix it myself and have the bastard running, now time to dig further alas, and this is all assuming the thermo fan isn't the be all and end all fo my motorbike cooling problems, grrr, not fuggin happy Jan!!!

May be completely wrong but I need to nut that out regardless, so how do I nut it out and rectify it if that's the fault?

1/ Short out thermo switch, if fan works forget that.
2/ Flush cooling system, see what junk comes out refill with PREMIX coolant.
3/ Heat bike up, remove the radiator cap see if coolant is swirling around if so your pump is working, if not remove the thermostat, put it in water and heat on the stove with a thermometer in and check what temperture it opens, look on the thermostat the Deg should be stamped on it if it does not open bin it and replace.
If that does not fix it check the timing if too far advanced it will cause it to overheat also.
4/ Replace radiator cap, if no good check for blown head casket, air bubbles rising to the top of the radiator.
5/ If this does not fix it, Insure it then burn it.

Update part 2: Shortened solenoid, fan she no go, so can I assume that's NOT the problem? Pulled the thermostat out, dropped it in a cup of boiling water and it didn't open a nanometer so that's OBVIOUSLY a problem, the milion dollar question is that the be all and end all?

Yes the fan should GO
Fan switch would not have a solenoid, relay maybe but I doubt it, OK, try this stick 12 volts from the battery to the fan, fan should work, I understand that normally the thermo switch that is screwed into the radiator would close contacts when the required temp was met, and the themostat is rooted if it does not open.

Replaced thermostat and fan switch/solenooid, now have a working thermo fan so am getting thre, bike is still running hot so goijg to check the water pump again tomorrow in case I didn't put it back on properly, a little low on collant level now too but not dramatically so I wouldn't think.

Taken water pump cover off, all appears fine, am I able to start the bike with this cover off so I can see if the impeller is actually moving or not or do I risk screwing something up?

Fwiw I sort of bit the bullet and just did it, motor runs, impeller sits there like a stale bottle of the proverbial so new water pump here I come...

ummm does the water pump start from scratch or is it thermo activated or activated by the thermostat...?? cos if the thermo not open...no water to pump....

I "thought/assumed" it started spinning once the bike starts, of course right at the minute there is no coolnat in the bike, but still, I thought the impeller was supposed to spin as soon as I started the bike...

That's what I would have thought, if it is not spinning the drive to pump is missing, gear/belt/spline ?, shaft of the the pump it self broken?
