EFI CPU failure!!!

Post by varden »

Well i got the diagnosis on my 03 ZX6R track bike from the mechanic today....

Hmmmm not the plugs......CPU must have shit itself ....alegedly.

I had a spare complete EFI system handy. I ran the parts down to him, he's fitted the CPU and bike "runs like a dream" end quote.

I'll be holding my hand out for the old CPU and the rest of my goodies when i go back, cos as far as I'm concerned an electronic failure would mean NO WORKIES AT ALL not flatspotting and rough idle etc.

What no vacume leaks, loose wires, blocked injectors??

Anyone else had an EFI CPU fail and allow the engine to keep running (badly)??

Man my luck with this bike has been a mixed bag......

Don't get dishartened Varden. 90% of race bikes are cantankerous little buggers that fail to operate at the most inopportune times. (yeah, like halfway thru lap 5 of a 5 lap race  )

I am sure now that you have it running it will stay that way .............................................for a bit anyhoo!

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

highly unlikey
one thing about electronics..they work
or they don't

if the CPU is dead..so is the engine in my experience

don't know about your particular model but some have what is called "limp mode". It's when it goes to shit it'll run good enough to get you home.

I had a problem with my racebike that was related to the atmosheric pressure sensor.

There is a lot of sensors on a injected bike and this may have been related. Have a look at the pins for cable attachment, they could have been damaged and not getting a signal.

I am the same as you in that i dont believe the ecu could have lost its mapping or anything, it would have to be related to an external issue.

fitted a PC to a new R1 the other week ,

bike was all good, but when ridden hard eg take off from lights and full throttle , at 4k and 7k it was like the kill switch had been hit

turned out that when fitting the PC and putting the plugs together a couple fo the pins didnt connect properly and were pusshing back out , so was a loose connection and only happened at certain vibrations to fail in the connection

of course the ECU is chock full of componants which could be bad at certain rpm's, heat level etc

electronics are strange things and can do all sorts of stuff to screw with your logical thinking

Not necessarily: your home PC might disagree with you! They can suffer from a number of hardware faults that aren't crippling: fried RAM, fried mainboard, fried graphics card - all of which might work fine 90% (or 99%) of the time, but fail under full load or when a certain condition is reached.

sounds like a bad solder join or a dodgy wire, something along those lines... a high resistance path
