oiling chain propery on the gpx250r

Post by rocco »

H GUYS/GALS

deciding to clean my bike chain.

I have a can of the spray on chain oil.

I was wondering what do i clean the chain with to begin with.

Read somewhere it would be kerosene....would this be correct?

Then wipe it up with a rag and then spray on the oil as the bike is on centre stand.

Cheers

ok im sure there is a thread about this somewhere.

but what i do, is yeh small amount of kerosene on the chain, then i use a chain wax, as it sticks better and doesnt splatter.

but note i also clean chain while its hot and reply wax while its hot as it will solidify slightly as the chain cools adding to its adherance and this will stop you having to clean it every week or so.

so recap.
clean with kerosene
apply wax
ride bike enjoy

to be done on a warm chain.

(this is what i do for my gpx250, and chain has lasted many thousand kms, along with keeping tension correct, and regular waxing)

hmm problem is sum chemicals can fark the o-rings (x/w rings) in ya chain as they are rubber...so the "reccomended" method to clean ur chain is to buy a chain cleaner (motul etc make em)...

my understanding is wd40,kero,degreaser etc can stuff ur chain....

that being said, i always clean my chain with wd40....and Kellz is right, a warm chain will hold more lube....but ur not oiling the LINKS..ur oiling the RUBBER grommets between links (o/x/w rings)...

i take my bike for a ride, get it warm (the chain)...then spray wd40 on a rag, wipe the chain down as best i can (but not too much around the rings, more the outside so it looks pretty)...then oil it up...

any excess will fling off, so be careful not to be too liberal, but dont be stingy either...

let it sit & soak for 5-10min, then go for a gentle run to absorb it...

while ur at it, might as well check tension & adjust too...

the recomended product is kero, listed in many manuals

find an old servo that still has a kero pump and pay a buck a litre

go here http://www.whipps.com.au/Pages/accessories.htm
and buy a chain scrubber , awesome device :)

BTW WD40 is chock full of kerosene

mate i wouldn't worry too much. Kero or diesel are both fine for cleaning chains.

After cleaning apply a thin layer of chain oil, run the bike for 15 minutes and then relube the chain. Its better to lube the chain after a ride, cos the chain is hot and the chain lube will flow better to the tight areas.
