as someone who has done it
here is sorta what my doc said...
The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and their tendons. These combine to form a "cuff" over the upper end of the arm
(head of the humerus). The four muscles - supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor - originate from the scapula, and together form a single tendon unit. This inserts on the greater tuberosity of the humerus. The rotator cuff helps to lift and rotate the arm and to stabilize the ball of the shoulder within the joint.
Most tears occur in the supraspinatus but other parts of the tendon may be involved.
--------------------------------
in other words..it involves a torn muscles
and it fucking well hurts....
and I might add.....
without surgery, takes a LONG time to heal

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

the rotator cuff..what a pussy excuse..its like one of the smallest groups of tendons in the body (for size i mean)...
i laugh when all these poofs at the gym go in & warm up by lifting weights to buld them up...but they are a TENDON..not a muscle...so u cant really get that much out of em...
theres an excersise or 2 u can do to rehab/strengthen it, but ull need it to heal a fair bit b4 u do...
u musta been soin sum weird ass lifting to tear a rotator cuff...more chance of straining it pulling urself....

Yup can't really do much for it until it heals up, and that can take a while depending on the severity of the tear ... and even then you have to be careful because often the scar tissue within the tendon is very inflexible and hence places strain on the tendon again.
See a physio or just try to get some further treatment for it, if you can afford it as it will be better off in the long run.
I can't remember exactly what i did, something like tear the tendon from the lateral insertion (hamstring/butt injury). Tore off some small bone fragments/fibres from my ass with it and now they are lodged in the tendon/scar tissue. Taken 12 months so far and it's still not able to do what it used to (having said that, I'm talking about kicking above my head)
