Yass to Tumut via Mt Narrangullen???
has anyone ridden Yass to Tumut via Mt Narrangullen and wee Jasper?
what is the road quality like?
what kind of distance is it?
is it interesting or just as boring as the freeway?
just looking at map thinking of different ways to get around the place...
thanks for the help.

I posted about doing that road last year, and the Canberans suggested the dirt is a bit rough and a bit far. Maybe if your on your GS1200 sure, but on one of the big K's sportier mounts it may not be worthwhile!

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

Yup! The road is shit! Well it is a heap of dirt, narrow, corrugated, twisty as hell... livestock all over it.... I took the adventra that way when we first got it.....however we went down to gundagai and then back along the freeway, which ended up being heaps quicker, even though it was much longer distance!Strika wrote:I posted about doing that road last year, and the Canberans suggested the dirt is a bit rough and a bit far. Yep I was there a couple of weeks ago, I friends with the owner of a property out there, it'd be good if it wasn't for the road being so narrow in most places and the 15 to 20 kms of corigated dirt, and the fact that the tourist in cars/4 x 4's tend to use the whole road mainly as its so narrow. But other than that its not too bad, lots of sweeping corners and a few hairpins thrown in for good measure just before you get in the township of Wee Jasper

thanks for the response.
i didnt realise there was dirt sections.
the map i was looking at wasnt obvious that it was dirt.
I dont care about a little bit of dirt if its taking me to some good roads but it sounds like this road is not worth it just yet.
On the PI ride we will be doing some dirt sections but they apparantly take us somewhere good. I was hoping to find a more interesting way into the snowies than the Hume. sounds like alpine way will be closed through thredbo so figured i would stay on the freeway and head to tumut.

Not sure where your departing from although the sig says Sydney thereabouts. But you sound like your looking for some nicer plodless roads to traverse. here's some suggestions!
If you come out the hume, from Goulburn duck around through Crookwell, and make your way to Booroowa, then harden, then Jugiong. Harden to jugiong is a pearler. Fwy to Gundagai-not far- then Tumut-Wondalga (then the back road which loops around toLaurel Hill) Tumbarumba, Tooma, Tintaldra. From tintaldra you have a choice to go two ways, or if your really keen and have the time make a loop of it.
1- Walwa to the Granya pass, tallangatta.
2-Toowong, Corryong, Tallangatta.
From Tallangatta go Tallangatta East up to nearly Tallandoon, and then head back down to Tangambalanga (yep I shit you not!
 )
Let me know if you want more!

You may not want to get there once you get on some of these roads!
Just watch out for the local plod around tallangatta. He's a really nice bloke, but he is crafty!!! I passed him one day while he was booking another car. I was doing 110 when I saw him, and he was standing next to the car he was booking, so no radar device in action, so I maintained the same throttle setting so it didn't look like I was adjusting speed. He stopped to have a chat with me later in town getting fuel. Tried very craftily to get me to admit I was speeding. You know, " I ride too.....Roads are great hey!........Some of those 120 kph sweepers are tops hey!!!" I just said.. wouldn't know, never been faster than 100kph around here mate....scares me too much
Just don't speed much on the straights. They find it almost impossible to get a lock on you in a turn, and it's not an accurate measurement anyhoo so they tend to hang on the straight bits as a result.
Don't ride early or late around those areas either. 1. Bug feckin city!!!! It takes around 15 minutes to completely cover your visor with little tiny black bugs along the Walwa road anytime in the late of day (mr. Sheen and a couple of chux in the bum bag works a treat). So get through earlier rather than later. 2. Roos and Wombats!

Unfortunately leaving the day before you but here's my plan for your viewing interest....
Leaving Sydney (Oyster Bay) Wednesday morning and staying somewhere like Tintaldra o'night.
Taking the Mittagong Road via Wollongong, Macquarie Pass, Mittagong, Goulbourn, roundtrip via Harden Jugiong to Gundagai. Then Tumut down towards Tintaldra (as Strika has already described).
Thursday Morning it'll be Granya, Tallangata, Kiewa, Dederang, Tawonga Gap, Bright (might bypass this and head straight to Myrtleford if time is getting away) Myrtleford to Dandongadale (via Lake Bufallo), 32k of dirt road to Chestnut, Whitfield, Mansfield. Mansfield to Alexandra then Healesville (via Black Spur, but might go Reefton via Marysville if time) and onto Warburton.
Really depends on time from here as to whether we finish off with Powelltown and Neerim or straight to Packenham and KooWeeRup.
Thats us...two old farts one on a ZRX1200R (red one) and one on a GSX1400. If I dont see you on the highway then it'll be the track, or in the Trackside campground.

Just one more law and everyone will be safe.
