Battery question

Just wondering... if my bike isn't going to be started for about two weeks over the holiday period, will it start ok when I get back? Should I get someone to start it for me every few days while I am away?

If its a fairly new battery it shouldn't bother it, if its only for two weeks. If you get someone to start it it really needs to be ridden for a bit or else it'll just flaten it if you just start it for a couple of minutes.

Nah, it'll be stuffed...so you'd better send it down here so I can look after it for you ;)

So given the chance of that I'll come clean and say no it should be fine for two weeks

As long as you don't leave your powered nipple clamps or anything else that may draw current attached to the battery, you'll be fine... :lol:

I have a charger your can borrow if needed.

As for the Battery it'll be fine mine sits longer than that most of the time anyway and no problems, and Mina's sits for months (from what i've heard) and ...... well i don't........it's been that long i've forgotten :lol: :lol: :lol:

it should be fine Colette, i've left both my new & old bike for a couple of weeks at a time without much problem. The new bike had a better battery and went w/o a hitch, however the old ones battery was a bit figged, so needed a topup of distilled water & it was fine (it had burned up water for a fair while, the two weeks were just the final straw for a sick battery going f-u!)

So the immobiliser won't drain the battery either?

Well i didnt account for an alarm. *does some maths*

Well the standby current is the variable. this jaycar bike alarm doesn't disclose its drain. The alarm im getting for my car uses 20Ma(milliamp) in standby mode (which seems pretty standard from what i've seen).

We *know* that theres a few different batteries and drain variables, plain lead/acid can loose from as little as 1 to 10% a month without a load, up to 60% with a load like the security system (ask RD for specifics) of their power per month unused, some gel cels loose 1% per week, max. Anyway, assuming a 7A/Hr battery with a 20

Assuming were using a plain Lead Acid battery, minus 10%/month gives us 6650A/hr after a week unused. an alarm at 20mA/hour uses about 480mA/day gives us about 2 weeks before the battery is fully drained. I'd definately suggest either disconnecting the battery or turning the bike over once a week/ just taking it out for a 30-45min run.

gee i think i went into this a *BIT* too much ;-)

oh wait, ,just an immobiliser, you'll have hardly the worry i was thinking of, i thought it was a full blown alarm.
