the age old tyre question hey!! Well, get ready for an influx of opinions of what's what, ....unless they are all bored with it now!!!!

I read an interesting article the other day, about a test done...a few years back now but the principles are still the same, where they put blind tyres on control bikes and let the same test pilots loose on them at the track all on the same day!

Some interesting observations where had, some of which I actually remember and some of which applies in your case.

They did static friction tests, braking tests, accelleration tests, and timed the laps of these riders also. from memory here we go...

1. The tyre which had the best static grip, recorded the slowest lap time
2. The tyre which had the least front end grip was noticebly faster in the hands of one specific rider who used the rear more.
3. The best braking tyre was mid pack in the lap times.
4. The tyre which had the best lap times by the majority of the riders was not a race tyre!!!!

I guess what those observations show is that it comes down to rider preference, or more importantly "Confidence" in the tyre.
These days with the amount of miles i have done over the years on shit tyres (in comparison with today, the roadies of now are better than my old race tyres from the mid 90's), I can now generally ride around tyre issues, however, throw a set of 002's or Racetechs under me and try and find which way I went! It's all about confidence.

Having said all that, if you have already had powers, you may be tempted to stick with them. Personally, I have no real issues with them as a road tyre, except for when they let go hot. I find them a bit snappy.

ATM, I am running what a lot of guys in here are running, Metz M3 on the rear! It seems to work well wet or dry hot or cold loaded or solo! They have worn better than any tyre I have tried prior, including Powers, 014's, Hi-Sports, Qualifiers. With sim grip to powers and 014's. They lay blackies just like the powers do!

I've got dunlop qualifiers on now and am very happy with them. Will be putting a set of M1's after a couple more trackdays. (got em cheap)

I reckon most of it comes down to the confidence you get mentally thinking that you've got the best tyre available and it's not going to let go on ya.

So whatever you get tell yourself it is the best, and if you do get it sliding too much, firstly ask yourself if you are doing something wrong and if you believe it definately is the tyres go and fit some slicks.

This is just an observation...........but the worst tyres made in 2006 are better than the best abilities of 95% of the riders who use them.......

My personal favourites are the Qualifiers, but for *just* trackdays, the 002's were really really really good :P :P

pilot powers are probably cheaper.

you can get a set for $450 fitted from SPM at tarren point.

I personally have lost a little faith (only a little) in the powers.
They are fine for the road (which is where they get most of their use - so i shouldnt complain but fuck it) but on the track i found they slide around a bit.

the Diablos i had last time were much better but then again they were $200 more and probably wont last as long.

thats my 2c worth and i am far from an expert.

OH GOODEE a tyre thread :D :D :D :D :D :D

For a gixxer thou you wanna stay away from the puncture prone ones like the powers & super corsa's. Even the Racetechs can be a little fragile but not as bad as the other 2.

Money's no object, For a litre bike go the Pilot Race, or CUT Dunlop slicks
I'm about to get bridgie 002's $330 a pair fitted to th'9 :D :D for the snowie Trip.
I would love to try as set of M3's soon to have an opinion on my own for them, but lots of guys whom i respect as riders reckon they're pretty fuggen good so i dont think you can go far wrong with them.

Keep us posted champ you can never have to much info on tyres.

I am pretty happy to hear that you went with the M3's! They are in my opinion the best road tyre I have ever ridden on. :)
