My story
judge for yourself
After having electrical trouble previously I replaced the battery on the bike with a sealed battery Brought it home filled it with the acid supplied and sealed it with the supplied strip to seal it No worries I thought
Date of purchase was October 06
Last fortnite I took the battery back to the place of purchase for a test as the bike was playing up a little :!: Slow on starting (you know from experience that some thing is not right ) flat spot on acceleration etc :!: :!: :!: :!:
Arriving at the battery place asked the young bloke to test it
put on a couple of devices and the result was its ok just a bit down on voltage so I thought all good put battery back in bike go for ride all appears good
Go for ride following weekend all good till 90 mins into ride stop and the bike cranks over but wont start experience tells me to clutch it before flattening the battery :shock:
Ride another 30k and the bike dies flat battery
To cut a long story short got bike home pulled the battery out got a screwdriver to lever the sealed section of the battery off the body an fark me the battery is nearly bone dry nearly one litre of water was added and placed on the charger.
It still holds a charge But I believe it has contributed to the damage of the recharging system which I now require rather expensive parts for see post

So when was the last time you checked the electrolyte level in your battery

I have never used a sealed maintenance free battery on a bike

guess this is the reason why :evil:

On replacing the original battery the regulator was checked and within spec readings were were obtained so the charging system was working

So my question is does a dry battery place excessive demands on the recharging system :?:

ummm i dunnjo...never had a prob with one...

tho i will say this..they have a air escape port for when u overheat them and boil them dry...makes me thingk ur voltage regulator isnt working, and ur getting 17v or sumthin thru ur battery..that will cause it...

check ur system...

Had same issue on my CBR. It killed 3 battries in 18 months. 1st one I thought old batt, that happens. 2nd one I thought must be a dud batt. 3rd one I found my regulator/rectifier was screwed. cost $150 to replace, but cheaper on batteries in the long run.

I think this is the problem - you have your cause and effect round the wrong way.

Bugger Sulli...

There is no such thing as a maintenence free battery...

Simple battery maintenence:
1. Always make sure the battery has enough electrolyte to cover the plates
2. Top it up with water if needed (distilled water is better)
3. Never leave the battery flat for an extended period of time
4. If the bike wont be ridden for a while, put a maintenence charger on it, or charge it up at least once every 2 months...
5. Don't automatically assume the battery is dead - get it checked out before replacing it...

Thats it - the dud charging system has boiled the battery, thats why its as dry as a nun's nasty.

RedDave - How about sealed Gel batteries. I have thought about them for 1 or 2 of the bikes...........not used them as yet......

I put a absorbed glass matt battery in mine, some of the guys where using them in the taxis and getting really good life out of them and if you have gone through as many batteries as i have in my time 125 bucks is looking cheap.


I am pretty sure theres no water in these.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

Gel and AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) batteries are a much better technology no doubt, but they do require the charging system to be working well...

They also shouldn't be charged like normal flooded batteries. As a battery charges it creates gas which needs to escape. Gel and AGM batteries are sealed and thus can not expire the gas.
