ZZR 250 Flat Spot @ 4-5k revs

Post by Cube »

Hi, I am new with limited riding experience. I purchased a ZZR250/93 model. I understand the ZZR250 are a high revving engine but I am not sure why it has a flat spot @ around 4-5k revs. Can anyone shed some light in this topic and suggest some things I need to have a look at.

Cheers,
Steve :P

hi, is it really a flat spot, where you notice the power fade/bogs down from what it was before and after you hit 4-5k or is it more of a percieved, as in "this thing ought to have more umph than this" ? Now i've gone back and thought about it, think about throttle position and revs, is it related more to throttle, as in you back it off a fraction and its ok, back on and it goes again? or is it throttle indifferent and as soon as you hit a certain revs, bam it shits itself?

If the former, related to the carbs, if the latter, liable to be an ignition issue.

for the former, first things first if you think its bogging down, drain the carbies at least once and then put wynns carby cleaner through the engine, put in one tank at double strength, (about 2 capfulls to the tank) and then one at the normal strength and see if that makes an improvement. If it does it just means there's just gunk on the pilot jets and hopefully you've flushed it away. if not there may be more residue in there than anticipated, or there may be another issue like a carb sync required or something equally irelevant.

if it sounds electrical, it could be coils breaking down, the advance, or a few other things. Figure out the hows & why's of it shitting itself & let us know more.

p.s welcome aboard :D

The bike revs through to 6-7k revs during gear change but when I am changing down to take a corner obviously the revs decrease, but when I accelerate I have noticed the taco is on 4-5k revs and the bike does not respond as I try to increase speed and power through to 6-7k revs. The carby jets have been cleaned 2-3 weeks ago and retuned, I have returned the bike back to the mechanic and there opinion is the bike needs to be revving higher through the corners. I am confused because I thought you would need to decrease speed and revs when moving in and increase speed and revs coming out of corner. Idle revs and high end revs are fine its just the 4-5k rev that is really annoying. Filters were replaced during the 18k ks service. Thanks for your advice.

Steve

Drop a gear or two and keep the rev's up! Keep practicing and youll get used to it... Small capacity bikes like to be revved (aka baby_ninja  ) and you'll begin to get a feel for the bike.

Dont look at the tacho keep your eyes peeled for whats around the corner and obstacles around you. Once your vision improves youll probably find that naturally your going a little faster and keeping those revs up there!

Keep riding at least once a day (where practicable) to improve your skills ;)

Practice Practice Practice

In the meantime have someone you know, who has some riding experience, a blast on the bike as they will know whether there really is an issue ;)

Good Luck and stay upright

Yeh your right, as I am riding more often I do have a better feel for the bike, there is just the lack of power when I need it and I feel it could be dangerous as I excellerate out of a corner, you become little apprehensive. Anyway I will ride with a few extra revs throw in some petrol treatment in the hope that it may clean the carbs, jets, etc. ;)

Thanks for your help on this matter. 8)

Mate

I had a 93 zzr 250 for the mrs

Trick is the only time you should be doing 4-5k revs is on the way to 8+k revs
