Rebirth of a ZZR250

Post by MrWasabi »

Well, as some of you know, the missus purchased a 250 a while ago and when we picked it up, it had no fairings on it, and some ugly looking thing for a headlight.
Had some damage done to it, from what we could see it was a high speed low side as the right handle bar was ground down pretty bad and so was half of the rear brake lever.
Still it was cheap as piss and apart from a few cosmetic things the bike looked pretty straight.

We started the bike briefly before we got it, and it started first go without any signs of a cough or splatter, so that was a good sign...
Stupid me popped it into first gear and let go of the clutch with the side stand down, so it stalled straight away. tried to start it back up and it wouldn't start...

Not to worry, lets get it home.

Got it home and immediately pulled it apart. What little fairings it did have, such as the tail fairings, they came off along with the battery, tank, levers, pipes, etc.
It sat like this for a while, cos i got distracted with other things.

Now that i dont have a licence, ive decided to bring her up to a road legal state and get it on the road.

So, Shinynoggin comes over, we head on down to to metro spares and i pick up an oil filter, and while im there a second hand pirreli front tyre for the other zzr.
I had previously put in 2 new sparkies but never bothered to try and start it as it had no fluid in it.
We whack in the filter and put some good oil in it....we dont have a battery. So out come the jumper leads and we use the car battery to start it.
few signs of struggles as the fuel is sucked out of the tank and she starts! :kuda:

Dont know what Shinny did but he got it start it, even if he doesnt believe that he did anything ;)

Anyways, since i know it starts ill dedicate myself to working on it.

Plans for the near future:
Carbies professionaly cleaned and balanced
Airbox cleanup and new air filter (currently its black)
New right hand lever along with throttle cables
Clutch cable
Chain
Front mud guard
silversold a minute crack in the radiator and give it a good flush
Bracket to mount instrument cluster and new headlight (Shinny and i spotted a good one but i cant remember what bike it was from, feel free to update me if you read this Paul)
front forks re oiled and re sealed maybe throw in $1.20 worth of 20c pieces in there too...

Plans for distant future:
New front and rear tyre
ZX6 front mud guard
Respray remaining panels. Not sure what colour yet.

Thats it for now. ill add more to the saga as i do more to it.

It might just be the angle of the photo, but the rake of the forks in the first pic looks far to steep, like they've been bent back at the headstock. Have you compared the wheelbase of this one to your other zzr to make sure it's straight?

Dave, can't compare it to mine as its not at home at the moment, but I measured it and the wheelbase is to the manufactures spec. it may be the angle, may also be the fact that it has no radiator, or that I removed the subframe bolts and pushed the back down (to get the air box out)

yeah man, those things are running 50w house hold neons....very F@#$ ugly indeed

going to end up with this on the front, mounted just under the instrument cluster so it covers all the nasty bits.

yeah, cant be bothered buying and painting a set of fairings, all its going to have on it are the tail fairings which cover the fuse box and relays etc, and the grabrail on the back which are already painted black like the tank.
