Would you be worried?

Post by Greenblood »

After taking the new 7 for a ride I dacided
to drop the fresh oil I put in a couple of weeks ago.
I was surprised to find metal chips in the bottom of
the drain pan after I emptied it.

All that glitters is not damage ;)
If it's new it's probably just factory remnants

It's the lack of oil in the pan I'de be worried about

I don't know the history of the bike, it's done 38K.
The weird thing is the first oil change I didn't notice any metal
& it's only done 200km on that oil. :?
I was using that to flush the motor out.

I didn't change the filter first time Tim
I changed it today, I will open the original one to see what's in it.
i don't know if there will be anything in it as there was no metal in the original oil.

Rinsing as you have done will most likely show crap up.
Usually it has had time to settle in the filter, so you don't even notice.
Ignorance is bliss....so I don't do short term changes ;) :kuda:

 - are the flakes magnetic or not, Joe ? I'd be worried if it's steel.
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..
If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !

Remember the crankcase is shared by the transmission gears, (or at least the oil is). Maybe the previous owner changed the oil when it was cold which tends to suspend the particals in the crankcase so they don't get drained. If it was me I would quit worrying unless you notice some strange sounds, lose oil pressure or notice some dramatic changes in the way it shifts. Always change your oil after the motor has warmed up and has not sat idle for any period of time. The best way, (and I know the oil is hot) is to go for a ride to get the mowtour, (Aussie spelling) hot, then change the oil as soon as you get back. It is also imparetive to have a Jim Beam and a cold brew, otherwise it will always be full of metal.

Just about all my Kwakas have or had flakes in the oil. No problems with any of them. Don't worry- just ride and enjoy! :D

Well the flakes are not attracted to a magnet.

Funny thing is oldman this drain was done when the oil was cold,
the first oil change was done hot ( no metal ) :?
I won't worry about it for now, but will listen for any noise or gearchange issues.
Thanks Guys.
