I have an ADT Alarm System installed in this house (previous owners), which is connected to the phone line.
It is no longer monitored but is causing my broadband speed to be nearly cut in half
Tried unplugging the phone line from the control box but it kills all the phone sockets
HELP!!!!!!

I have no idea .... but ....

as long as its NOT 240 volts - disconnect power to alarm and leave phone line connected ...

Yeah it's only 12 volt but then I won't have an alarm at all

Buy a Rottweiler, then - on second thoughts .. if your alarm is working and you can't post here .... then we win !!!!!

go get some PSTN line filters ...from DSE (Dick Smith) or Telstra
these plug into the sockets where the normal phone is hooked in
this INCLUDES the ADT alarm plug (you then plug everything normal phone wise
into the filter) You need one for every socket in the place where a normal
phone (not VOIP) or alarm is plugged in
About $20-25 each

these cut out the noise inc the dial tone that runs on normal phone lines
and the ADSL signal strength improves ...and the broadband speed goes up

had to do this on my place

The alarm socket is wired incorrectly or is faulty. You need to get a phone cable person to look at it. Most sparkys could fix it.
Alarm phone sockets are wired in what is called a 'MODE 3' configuration. Check-out the following links.

when i first read the title of this topic, the first thought to go through my head was that bloody remote start i was gonna say, dont tell me you and daniel were attempting to try hooking that bloody thing up again!

From TPG........I conducted a test on your phone line and have seen high capacitance on the line that could be caused by faulty internal cabling, improper filtering or filtering issue as well as line issues that affects the ADSL speed connection. Please make sure that you have the proper filters for each device connected to your phone line. For regular phones, use a regular microfilter. For other devices such as cordless phones, fax machine, or efpos, it is advisable that you use a central filter or a filter/splitter instead of a regular ADSL inline filter. If you have alarm system or you are connected to a PABX commander system, make sure that it is connected to a central splitter.
My phone is VOIP and has a filter, the junction box outside has a Telstra filter with three lines but disconnecting it completely had no effect whatsoever on the phone line, so I would say it has been bypassed somewhere in the past
I'll try a filter tomorrow night on the RJ12 socket on the main PCB in the control box....if that doesn't work
I won't cut into my drinkin time anymore...I'll just call an expert

An alarm system that uses the telephone line is put in series with the rest of the phones in the house. This is so when the alarm goes off the system can sieze the line without interferance from an off hook phone. What they usually do is take the wire that has the dial tone and run it into the alarm and back out to the rest of the phones. The color code in the U.S. is the white/blue blue/white pair is the dial tone. They have probably split that inside the jack. All you need to do is reterminate that split and you should be good to go. If it is older wiring it might be the red green pair. The alarm circuit will cause reflective feedback that will interfear with your high speed bit rate, (capacitance or inductive reaction). Have a Jim and all becomes clear. By the way the filters they give you will be of little use as the jack would have to be rewired to accept it and you would probably need two jacks. By the way the talk voltage is only 48 volts and should not be dangerous, if the phone rings it will be a low wattage 105 volts that will shock you but will not be like your house power. It will wake you up but should not kill you unless you are standing in water or peeing while holding onto the wire.

By the jack, you me the little male RJ12 that plugs into the main PCB of the alarm control?

By jack I mean the female jack on the wall. They wire it so it goes into the alarm on the w/bl pair then back to the wall on the w/orange pair inside the cord. Once into the wall jack it continues on to the rest of the phones. If you pull the wall jack apart by removing the cover or unscrewing it from the wall you hopefully will see what I'm talking about. If I wasn't so fucking far away I would do it for you. If you are still struggling I will draw up a wiring diagram and post it.

There is no wall jack near the alarm, but apparrently the telstra guy was fucking around with a wall jack in the dining room whan he hooked the lines back up

Hmmmm the main jacks must be up in that prick of a roof. (tile access only) Two of these in the house and thats it, must be all up in the roof
