Front axle problem...

Post by Felix »

Got my forks today, so put them in tonight.

Everything went ok, until I did the front axle nut up. For some reason even modest tightening of the axle nut makes the wheel incredibly stiff to turn. As far as I know, nothing is missing, or lost, as I removed the wheel and put the axle through the entire assembly to keep it all together. What should I be checking?

Tops of the forks are not set at the same height in the triple tree

Well I actually measured that, then decided to loosen one side...you reckon I should start again? It is a tomorrow job now...

I measured from bottom of bottom triple clamp to top outer tube...but hey, if you reckon that is it, I'll do it again.

Logically, can it be anything else?

Check were the tubes come thru the top of the upper fork clamp measure the forks from there.

Oky dokes. On the ER the tubes are supposed to be level with the top of the clamp...I have checked the diagrams and don't see anything missing. I can't imaging anything having broken.

I did hear some creaking coming from the mud guard when initially tightening up the axel nut so maybe that was the sound of the forks trying to level themselves out?? Hmmm...there might be something in that Neilp 8)

Actually if you remember this: http://www.ksrc-au.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2364

I wonder if maybe there was a reason for that difference? Or maybe now with the forks being rebuilt it will all be different?

Fixed! With a little help over the phone from Steve Wood, deadset legend that guy! Speedo drive assembly not quite in properly, but just enough to fool me. Now I just need to buy some axle grease...
