Back in the good old days, they hadn't figured out knee sliders, but they new that the leathers gripped the tarmac and eventually ripped apart. So they stuck heaps of race tape to their knees so that their knees slid over the tarmac.
That's what Kenny Roberts reckoned, anyway...
