Metzler Rennsports

Post by Strika »

I have a friend with an 05 R1, who had a set of these Rennsport RS1's fitted, and is having an awesome run out of them. I saw them when he had 6000klms on them and they looked to have another 2k left in them (rear, front had more). Not all torn up like the rocks and loops tend to do. He is a guy who really can steer, so I value his opinion, and he reckons even trying to be silly while on a trip to Canberra over Chrissie n New Year he could not get them to spin! He says the feel is mint and they grip great even from cold.

So I just went and had a set fitted. An RS1 for the front (Soft compound race) and an RS2 for the rear (Med compound race).

A bit early to tell you anything as I have only ridden out of the city on them, but will keep you posted. P.S. in the city had a deal on em $450 fitted. But only what they have in stock.

I am doing a trip to country NSW leaving early tommorrow so will let you know when I get back how they stood up to it. The road is fairly straight unfortunately but at least it will even out the wear. The Hi-sports I took off (2600klms) are still good as a commuter tyre, so maybe this trip will balance things out and give me some life out of this set. :D

I used to run Rennsports on my ZX9 and my mate run them on his R1. We used to get them well priced from Galvin Marketing. Most of the riding I was doing then was trackdays and the grip was really good from the RS2's

I don't know what they'd last like just on the road but about three or four ridedays used to kill them. I'd be surprised if you got more than a few thousand out of them on the road though, but it'll be interesting to see, I may have underestimated them. If they last that well I'll use them.

Thats what I thought being a SS race tyre as such! However I have physically sighted these tyres on my mates bike and they looked in really good nick!

The trip I am doing will be around 1600 klms there n back so I will let u know towards the end of the week!

Thats a Bloody good price Strika, a bloke up here sells them for $550 a set & the "cashed up Guns" fit them to their 12r's (Hammer & Big Kev) I reckon based on all reports they would be "THE BEST" road tyre available slightly better then the Pilot Races, but at $550 a set I'll stick with My Soft Shinko Stealths at $300 a pair.
Normal wear range on the Racetechs is 4K on a 12r rear (unless your allergic to corners then maybe 6k)
Whats this blokes number i'll ring him Because we may need tyres for the return trip from the Superdoopers.

1/2 trip report.

Post by Strika »

Saying hi, from country NSW right now with @50% of the trip completed. Did 750klms today. Left Melbourne @ 8.00am and arrived destination @2.30pm. The slowest bit was Mel-Albury, although thnx to some rapid tin tops and some crafty road positioning i managed that in 3hrs. The run up the olympic way made me appreciate soft sprins n wide Renthal bars! LOL.
Stopped at Albury for fuel and some food @11.00 and jumped back on to try n reach my destination before it got too hot. I turned left a few klms out of albury n headed for Wagga via Culcairn. I went along the back rd thru Walla walla to avoid provoking unwanted attention. Took the Wagga bypass and the turned for Junee. The rd fm Albury to Junee has been resurfaced recently but the didn't remove the bumps. Thankfully fm Junee thru Cootamundra and on to Young is smooth n has a decent amnt of turns to keep u amused.
A friendly oncoming motorist flashed, n warned me that Brownie (the local plod) was just outside of Coota, so i thankfully was saved a few dollars. Thnx Mr. AU wagon!

The run from here was uneventful but fun, with me seeing mostly $1-40+ for the remainder of the run.

The new Metzlers still look brand new. They are typical of race oriented tyres in that they don't roll into turns. They're upright or at full lean! I love em. I played around trying to break traction on the rear but failed. I may return home via Damondrille,Jugiong, tumut, hume weir, mt beauty,Bright,Whitfield, Mansfield, Eildon, taggerty, buxton on thursday just to make it a little more interesting!

With 4600 klms now on the Hornet, the new rennsports have done 2400klms, which is 200 or so k's more already than the previous set of Michies! VFH about that!

I estimate by the look of the rear tyre that I have prolly nother 3-3500 k's left in it. So am looking at this point at @ 6K out of these tyres. Now for me that is excellent life. Especially considering the levels of grip they offer.

Yesterday going down the go road, although it wasn't raining, we did encounter the odd wet patch of road, and the rennsports still felt quite secure. Methinks water lying on the road, may produce slightly different results however. Will let you know after i have ridden in torrential rain.

I am yet to unhook the rear tyre, so still cannot comment on how these tyres react when they lose traction. I may have to do a track day to find out. :D

Is this what's called powerslide? Is the result a black lines aftermath like in those track pics?

How do you do that (the technique, not the mishap  ) ? Do you need lots of power (will a 600 do it?)

Laying black lines exiting a turn is not powersliding. It is the bit just before it powerslides!

You can pretty much powerslide anything, but more powerful bikes make it require a little less skill. And yeah, A 600 will lay blackies, and will powerslide if ya have nuff kahoonas!

And to answer yr question, it requires a skilled throttle hand to do and control a powerslide properly. I can admit to having done them plenty of times, mostly though unwittingly, not deliberately!

Lukey Heights is perhaps my fav place to lay blackies, and then slide the rear. As you enter Lukey, if you keep the throttle open up the hill, it will lay huge blackies all the way thru. Michies and Bridgies are the best for it at the moment. Old sportmax GP's were fun in their day too  Then as you crest the hill, if you give it a little more gas while leaned over, it will literally get the arse end out and point you back to the LHS of the track for the entry into MG. Do it right and it's one of the best feelings you will ever get. I literally giggle in my helmet mid race when I do this shit. But get it wrong, and let me tell ya, it's gunna hurt!

u run shinko's on ur tigger?? i use to run them on a cb 900 (i was young, didnt kno much abt tyres, and they were cheap), but i havent heard of ne 1 still using them on bigger, more powerful bikes....
interested to see wot u think, as i believe they are made by one of the bigger companies anyway (michellin or sum1??)...
im interested to kno the verdict, cos $300 a set seems like a resonable touring/commuting tyre if they can handle a bit of play, and they get a few k's...

Well I am not going to get 8000klms out of the rear Rennsport like my mate did. He must be lighter than me hey!

I have now done 4400klms on them, and the rear has I reckon maybe one more, maybe even two rides left in it! Not bad though as the original michies only lasted a little over 2200klms! So I estimate that 5000-5300 k's is about what i can expect. These have now been superceded by the new Racetechs, so maybe they will give a little better life?

The interesting thing is that the middle has worn faster than normal due to me doing three rides with a pillion, so probably 1000klms out of the 4400 so far is two up. Not bad for a race tyre!

The front looks as though it has another 4000+ left in it, so it may even be more economical again, with two rears two a front replacement wise. I'm loving it Jerry!

Good result mate. I had a look at the new Racetech the other week and they look a nice tyre. I think I'll give Metzelers a shot next time

Good to see you back up n about Ponti. You silly bastard you gave us all a scare!!!

Screw your dodgy Shinko's Ponti. :P I went and fitted a set of Dunny Q's orf a new aresehix. They are supposed to be harder than the pucka ones we buy at the shops, but they seam to grip really well so far. Especially in the wet, plus they give typical Dunlop feedback and feel stable in the turns. I will keep u informed as to mileage.

The rennsports I took off, the front had done 8000klms and I reckon I may have got a trip to sydney and back out of it still....as long as I took the fwy. The rears were a little different with between 4-4500klms out of them depending on usage. Funnily enough, they wore evenly across the tyre from edge to edge.

A guy I rode with on saturday had a new set of the latest Dunlop SS race tyre the 207GP. It is similiar to the Rennies in as far as they have fark all tread grooves. Especially near the edge. But they gripped well, wet or dry. :)
