They make it smell like it does on purpose. I prefer the smell of it after a long day of riding with the hint of petrol fumes.

mate a classic example.

i was down at superchaep auto on the weekend. i happened to walk past tie down, so i stopped to have a look.

a single tie down was $8.95 and below it was exactly the same tie down in a 2 pac and it had a picture of a motorbike and was called a motorbike tie down set and it was going for $22.95.

i read every single letter on the packaging and fook me dead it was the identical tie down.

even a cheaper oil like Penrite 30 is $35 retail

of course you could try BiGW 'Gold' at $5.99 for 5 litres
its a bargain :twisted:

i'm talking motul 5100 $50 retail compared to castrol/ mobil $25 retail.

didnt know bigw made oils. i'll be sure to check it out.

The tip is to wait until supercheap auto are having one of there 20% of sales and pick up a couple of 4 litre bottles of castrol GPS.
Its a semi synthetic bike oil 10w 50, same as motul 5100 but has a larger viscosity range so is better on cold days.
The std price at super cheap auto is $45, but on sale is $36....

I remember there was a great article on the web comparing cazr and bike oils. Was on a Ducati website of some sorts. Basically Mobil one car oil was the best for car or bikes.
I run Mobil Super XHP ($17 or so for 6 L from Big W) in all my vehicles except the ZZR- and I run it in on Mobil Super XHP. I have done 100000km in my HR ute on that oil and it still is A1- my Hyundai Excel has nearly 200000km on it using the same oil, and I have done 110000km of that mileage. Engine still good-will go to 300000km easily if I keep it- paint is getting crappy so I might not. Most motorcycles I have are either old (1980 is oldest- 2003 is newest) or have an old design- even 2003 ZZR1200 engine dates back to 1983 - a derivative of the GPZ900 engine- so as long as the oil spec is higher- SG or higher from memory I can't see a problem. Mobil Super XHP is not friction modded, so all my clutches are AOK. :D
Been changing oil in my bikes at 5000km, but 2500km for the GN250 coz it gets such a hiding- no engine failures or undue wear detected yet. I reckon my bikes do around 50000km cumulatively each year- will be interesting to see how they go over time. I have done 7000km on my GT550 so far- and I bought it the week before Christmas- and have been riding all my other bikes at the same time too. Changed the clutch in the GT when I got it- it slipped when cold- was still new spec-wise but facings were hard as- maybe someone else used the wrong oil at some stage- never changed a clutch before. :?

best thing about motul is the esther additives, makes the gearbox smooth as silk even on an old shitter 8)

On another note, if ppl want to get there hands on some full synthetic oil, give the Putoline a try.

:shock: If you can find outboard oil thats cheaper than mower oil, thats really odd....... Normally marine stuff is *way* more expensive......

I use to run my whippersnipper with Silkolene Pro-Comp 2 (fullsynth) ,and avgas - premixed..........you should have heard the bastard !!! mate, the gum trees weren't safe :lol:

its also cheaper to buy chainsaw chain oil than it is to buy motorcycle chain lube :wink: $16 for 4L ... compared to like $20-30 for can of bike chain lube

My local BigW, the mower and outboard stuff is similar priced in the 1L bottles, but the savings are in getting a 5L bottle. On special I can get the Valvoline (or Castrol at supercheap) for around $24.

Cheap chain lube is the Castrol stuff, ~$7.50 at supercheap or repco and it doesn't attract as much grit as the more expensive stuff. TAC2 can also be used but that is around $11.

250ml and 300ml respectively, sure it isn't as much as 4L chain oil, but it is easy to apply. The 4L stuff would probably be easiest to use with a Scottoiler

yeah it would

but i take some from the 4L jug and put it into a smaller container with a squirt nozzle on it, pretty easy to apply

i also beleive its a better product too, seems to last weeks without being re lubed where motorcycle chain lube seems to last not much more than a week, gets a very good life out of the chain and doesnt attract much dirt (think about how much dirt and sawdust a chainsaw has to deal with)
