ZX10R tail section

Post by MickLC »

I've read about it on the US ZX10R forum, but now it has happened to me. One of the tabs on the top of the tail section, just underneath the cover over the tail light, has got a bloody big crack in it. Two of the three tabs that the tail light screw into have broken off as well, so the whole shebang was rattling around like a bastard until I taped it all up.

The cracks are hard to see unless you take the little cover off.

I've taken it back to the dealer for warranty and they are checking pricing of the replacement tail section. If it's under $500 they can order it straight away, if it's over that they need "approval".

It's all stock back there, aside from the ventura rack mount which is bolted to the subframe. Luckily I had things taped up a bit to stop any possible scratching on the Supers trip, so that actually held things together a bit.

My baby has a broken bum

It happened to mine and the guy across the roads 10... Although most dealers seem to think it doesn't happen...

I found a hair line crack in the small piece between the seat and the passenger seat the other day. I took it to the local dealer on Saturday and I'm waiting for them to get back to me...
I think if I wait for them, nothing will happen.....

Yeah, they did the old "hmmmm that's strange, never seen that before" bit, but I bet they have

So have you done anything to stop it from happening again?

I had mine apart a couple of weeks ago and I didn't notice anything but I might have another look. It's not the velcroed on bit is it?

It's the main tail section, and the cracks formed under the velcroed on bit, which is why I didn't see them straight away. The velcro was about the only bit holding the tail light on too.

No, they put a new tail on it, (it was found during the accident repair) and it looks ok so far.

Its just moved to the little bit between the seats..

Now, if only u could all get together and take them in at the same time to the same place.. Difficult I know, but then they may realise the problems?

I've been told by the dealer they won't cover the crack in mine because it was in an accident...
Shows the little faith they have in there own dealers to repair bikes.!!!

I've e-mailed Kawasaki to see what they say...

I thought it was a bit interesting the first time I pulled it apart. They have a Velcro tab at the back as well as two bolts holding the top tail bit on.

In my discussion with Kawasaki Tech today they did mention they have had a few tails replaced under warranty. They believe the problem is when the rear plastic guard is removed or cut and or the No. plate is too high. This and ppl moving the bike by grabbing the tail section...
Not sure how true the first one is as mine and the guy across the road had std tails when the crack appeared..

That's interesting, but then I can guarantee that I haven't done any of that with or too my bike. The one thing I have noticed is that the standard guard doesn't seem to be supporting the tail section very much, so I might have a closer look at that after it's fixed.

It's good to know for any discussions I have with them though as I am still waiting to here back about it.
