brakes squealing

Post by smek »

just noticed today that my front brake is squealing a bit .. ya know that classic brake squealing sound.
i put new pads on maybe 500k's ago.

any advice on what's likely to cause it and what i should check ?

Put some oil on em, that'll quiet them down... Acutally don't... :D

May find the pads might be glazed (depends on how you use them) and need roughing up.

If you don't heat them up enough when riding, then the pads go 'shiney' and make wikud noises... Still work ok tho. 8)

That's my 2c anyway.

nikos...
glazed pads would be my diagnosis
'glazed'? as in the pad surface gets shiny coz the pads have not been bedded in
fix?
take pads out....find nearest concrete footpath or driveway
rub friction side of pad on concrete to roughen 'em up
(watch knuckles or fingers don't get the same treatment  )
and DON"T breathe in pad dust!
then
get emery paper and rub disk rotor across the disk, NOT round and round...
(and do both sides) where the pads rub
then put pads back in
find quiet street or carpark
go thru 8-10 hard stops (don't lock front brake) from 50kmh down to
10kmh (beds in brake pads)
then go for a ride and use front brake normally
come home and let cool down
problem should be gone

cheers

If they are glazed, I am pretty sure there is a paste you can get that you apply to the pads, then just go for a spin. :?: :?: :?:

are you sure that you're not talking about copper paste which goes on the rear of the pad ??

My brakes are opposite of that. When I pull them on they feel like they are loose and jumping around all over the place. They also make a grinding noise when I use them.

I have checked calipers etc and everything seems to be ok. I guess that's just the way they are.

Sounds to me like your pads might be cooked. You should try deglazing & bedding in the pads (as per Yodas previous post) and if that doesn't fix it, may be time to replace them. I used to have the same problem on my ZZR & 95 ZX6, particularly with some of the SBS pads I'd used. I now use only OEM pads or EBC-HH and I couldn't be happier.
