Just pulled the water pump off, there is a shaft that drives that impeller and it goes into the motor somewhere and it's broken, how, why? Fucked if I know, now a matter of sussing out if it's worth fixing or the bike goes to Vic bike wreckers as a piece of shit and I either a) become a cager or b) more likely, loook to get a loan for a bike..

Pink ribbon will have to go without me :( along with a shitload of other bike rides for a while I reckon, damn!!!

Mick - I think you may find that impeller shaft breakages are not that uncommon at all. Remember, that little shaft has to pump through thousands of litres of coolant each week ( assuming you ride every day).

Not sure on the exact figure, although I am sure there is an anorak out there who could work it out, but assuming it takes 1 minute to pump 8 litres of coolant through the system, then 1 hour riding would equal 480 litres pumped...............do that 5 days per week, and you are looking at almost 2,500 litres per week...... :shock: ( and thats using conservative estimates of pump capacity...)

Replacing the impeller shaft is a pain in the arse, but not the end of your bike, thats for sure. Chin up mate, it could have been heaps worse.

It could?? Well yeah I guess it could, dunno about MUCH worse but indeed could be worse. Quote for repair is around $1500, have to take the motor out, split it, replace shaft and indeed water pupmp, then put it all back together and back in the bike.

Will be needing a veritable shitload of gaskets and frankly it's not worth it so time to go bike hunting.

This will become a project, hopefully not as big a project as Tapes :D

So what's exactly broken? the shaft that drives the impeller on the pump? or whatever the heck it plugs into within the motor?

I took the waterpump off my old gpx recently and the shaft went all the way into the motor, i gather the fugger broke and has fallen into the sump somewhere?

That's a bit of bad luck Mick.

Mine went earlier in the year, first I knew about it was when it leaked oil all over the footpath at work. When I pulled it off to replace the o-ring sealing the outside world off from the engine oil, I found the bearings in the water pump had shat themselves. I'm guessing if I hadn't found it when I did then the bearing contents would have found themselves inside the engine with disastrous results.

Anyway, I got a 2000 model pump from a wrecker and used the internals with my casing (the 2000 has a manifold heater fitting). Seems ok...so far :wink:.
