No, like MG said, you don't need the red key if you've disconnected the battery...it still stores the current key codes in the immobiliser. I have tested this on my bike and have had the battery disconnected a few times for a reasonable period of time with no ill effects.Glen wrote:If you don't have the red key apparently you are pharked and a long way from home if you disconnect the battery. The immobiliser/ECU will only allow you to restart with the red key. Without the red key you're only option is a new ECU at approx $2k.
This is the spiel I got when I bought mine. I haven't tested it though. Perhaps ring a Kwaka dealer to confirm

or in the unfortunate event that you loose your last remaining key, get a motec ECU fitted that will work with any random key cut for your ign..... or toggle switch
gets rid of that pesky top speed limiter too.

Had the battery in the 10, in & out 3 times, charged from being totally discharged & it started every time with the black key no worries... I have the red locked away just in caseGlen wrote:If you don't have the red key apparently you are pharked and a long way from home if you disconnect the battery. Re: 05 zx-10r No red key
i was going to buy a spare key from the US and i asked the seller if it had a chip in it to program it to the ecu. The guy replied that the US versions the immobiliser thing and therefore do not need the red key. maybe you can bypass the immobiliser somehow and then just get another key cut somewhere.
