chain adjustment: cotter pin?

Post by abe »

hey guys, about to do my first maintainance on my first bike. Realised my chain had a bit of slack, so I had a look at the service manual and know what to do.

My question is, where do you guys get the 'cotter pin' from? Are they available at shops like bunnings, supercheap etc. Or will I need to go to a motorcycle shop?

Cheers,
abe

Bunnings, Supercheap, Repco etc all have them. A packet of them will only cost you a couple of bucks.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Use an R Clip......... then you wont have to replace it again.
Any bearing place will have them + some bike stores & accessories stores ;)

If you mean a split pin (I always thought a cotter pin was something for the crank on a pushbike??), then R clips are handy little fuckers. They make maintanance a doddle. Sure, if you caught your leg the right way in a crash, it would slice you open, but so would a split pin given the right circumstances. Split pins and R clips are all usually available at any decent auto place. I use R clips on the racer and split pins on the roadie. Reason being, it's usually not a matter of urgency to change something on the roadie, whereas, on the racer time is usually against you. If you need to do any adjustments while out riding your roadie, a little care taken fitting and removing the split pin can mean it can be used a number of times. Just watch metal fatigue as they can fracture after a few uses.

You could also lockwire it if need be.

Yeah much easier than the R type clip & no hassles of the clip stretching out over time of use or half hanging out sideways
I used a lynch pin on my old 97 ZX6R also & was one of the 1st things i done to my ZX10R after i purchased it 6 years ago seems they make wheel adjustments or changes way easier :kuda:
