Some things havnt changed at all and it isnt all doom and gloom either IMO, all we need is another Sir Joh to sort it on a global level

I dont speak for all here as some parents are exceptional in giving quality time to their children and it is pleasing to see....but....

The reason why other things have changed for the worse is my generation and the hippie gen before me changed the whole approach, it is our fault collectively being too easy, busy and lazy, hazy, drunk and broke.

A quick summary of how I see the decades from the late 1960's.
Peace out man :weedman:

Hey thats cool dude whatever lets get wasted.

Did you see James got a new M3, I so getting one of those on a plan, I hope there will be no recession forced on us.

How are we going to afford the kids now, ok we both work harder/longer forever but at least they get what they want.

We would like to think we instilled some sense of moral responsibility in them when we were actually not keeping up with the Jonses and when they got off the playstation nanny to wear out the fridge hinges to have 1 minute of their time, now its there turn and I dont hold much hope.
But in time all of this will turn around the other way for the better, if I didn't believe this I would be seeking professional help.

I have four son's dude, two grandsons and a grand daughter.
The demise of our kids and our society as a whole, boils down to one word....
LITIGATION!
FEAR of litigation has everyone ducking for cover, with next to no-one prepared to take responsibility for any damn thing.
It's a Mathematical certainty that things will only get worse, the population increases with every generation...so does the problem!
It's as certain as the innevitable failure of Capitalism.
Privatisation of utilities, giant corporations and companies in general must INCREASE their profits every year to
keep their shareholders happy...those same rich share holders are the ones that employ most of the population
and don't want to increase your wage or salary because it cuts into their profits
Mathematics is your friend! Use it and prepare for the innevitavle collapse and destruction of everything you Ostriches hold dear! ;)

What to do with Wayward Kids?

Good points Poss , Jono and even Steve ( damn why can't I do a shocked smilie on tapatalk damn ) :)

Society couple with a busy lifestyle by both parents now. Not many families could afford to live now without both parents working.

Then you have fear of litigation an political correctness. Again well done Steve , I knew you could make a good point without swearing or boiling over. I proud of ya . :)

Two more pages since the last time I checked this thread.
Russ, it's not working because society is changing and becoming more about the individual’s own rights while people are too selfish to respect the rights of others. Steve has made a good point about litigation being to blame as it is the main reason schools and the police force have become so inefficient (ten times the paperwork than in the past) and powerless. When they took away corporal punishment in schools they also stopped streaming and failing kids. All of a sudden there were no consequences for noncompliance or for students failing to complete work.
Also, the introduction of mobile phones and the internet, along with the lack of parenting from busy, often clueless parents and combine it with the general belief that is spreading in society that to protect someone’s self-esteem you have to make everything in life easy for them and it is a recipe for raising self-centred, lazy kids with very few social skills. Fortunately the majority of kids are still good kids who work hard and are respectful of others, but the increasing number of dysfunctional kids is what stands out and is what everyone notices.
At no point did I imply that there should be no consequences when raising kids, just that the consequences do not have to be physical punishment and if that form of punishment is used, it is more likely to be counterproductive with disconnected kids. What I have to establish with the kids I work with first and foremost, is that there are boundaries they have to conform to and there are consequences to themselves and to others when they violate these boundaries.
Unfortunately there are far too many kids bought up in households where this lesson is lost. Kids are often given everything they want without any responsibility to go with it. Whether it's the parents not wanting to disappoint them or they give in to demands too easy because they don't have the time, energy or knowhow to deal with a demanding child, more and more kids are pandered to and cannot handle any inconvenience placed on them.

i have to say i agree with a lot of nick's points, nelso and poss... steve you make some valid points but you have an uncanny knack of boiling down the whole of society to about 3 sentences, which is impossible...

i would never respect someone who hit me, even tho i may fear them. Nick you made this point beautifully.

The other point i might make is that it would seem that some baby boomers and some gen x-ers are those who were brought up in the era of the cane, or the wooden spoon or the strap, and that it is these generations of parents that are raising these wayward and reckless and fearless brats of children... maybe that is because those particular parents arent allowed to hand out punishment they way they would like, or maybe its because in their formative years they didnt learn particularly great lessons in setting boundaries and dealing out punishment... i dont know the answer, probably a healthy mix of both.

but what would i know, im a member of the selfish gen why generation all you people love to hate so much

The fact that it's been expanded from the three sentences is the main problem ;)

3 points
1-resprect is earned, not given
2-rights come with responibilities; you dont get rights without responsibilities
3-the $100k a year job is not a starter. your first job will be shitty and boring for shit wages; and if you can prove yerself, you may earn better over time

if you dont like that, or cant handle that then maybe you dont belong here, maybe euthanasia is the right option for you

my 2 cents worth
I am a bilingual illiterate; i can't read or write in two different languages

We have enough trouble with the youth in Aus, without worrying about the youth in Asia!
