04 Crim Top gear problems
Hello more informed people than me, Down at the island recently towards the end of the second day i began to struggle to get into 6th gear, with and without a clutch. 5th did it aswell but only 2 or 3 times, 6th was nearly everytime. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Im hoping it isnt gear box and that it may have something to do with high speed, but im probably not that lucky. Also is can u wobble the tank a bit? I only just notice mine isnt tight it has a bit of play, bolts are tight.

Tank is rubber mounted.
Take a pic of your gear linkage and post up

When I try to upshift there's mechanical resistance, it isnt slipping on the spline

Would rotating the linkage on the spline so its operating closer to 90 degrees help?

yes!stetto wrote:Would rotating the linkage on the spline so its operating closer to 90 degrees help?
The little dot on the spline, should line up with the slot on the linkage when in street pattern. And 180deg opposite when in race pattern

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
Had exactly the same problem at PI on my 05. It was fine for a couple of laps then wouldn't shift into 6th at redline. Couple of laps later it wouldn't change into 5th. As soon as you slowed down it was fine. I tried clutch/no clutch and it was all the same. At normal speeds on the road it was fine. I sold it as it was.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
You could try shortening the rod and rotating the spline to 90 deg, may help.... Can't quite tell from rearset pic but it looks like there is another hole for the rod to mount under the one its in atm. Try that one as it may give more movement of the rod for less movement of the foot..
I think Glen tried all those simple things to no avail with his.
Does the shift rod (the bit with the spline on the end going into the engine) have any sideways movement.? Theres a locking circlip inside the engine case on the clutch side that keeps it in place and this has been known to come of - well it did no mine anyway.. You have to drop the sump to get to it.
To check the other side of the rod, the detent arm and star wheel, you have to remove the clutch basket.
May be a selector fork, which means splitting the cases.
Try the simple stuff first, obviously... like giving it a wash and changing the oil. .

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
These rearsets werent on when it was occuring, ill have to check sideways movement tomorrow. Problem is checking it involves doin 250 plus. Hopefully rotating the spline fixes it. Did u ever find out why it did it Glen? Sounds identical

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
I had a simular issue with the zx6 trackbike, I tried all the lever adjustments as above (see thread), made it marginally better for a short while until this happened all because of a bent shift fork.:

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
I am not saying this is what is happening to yours but it does sound similar and would be impossible to tell from here, I did all the adjustments to the linkages etcstetto wrote:Nice wats the damage physically and financially if this happens? Or to fix it before it happens
It broke a few gear dogs off, bent shift fork and damaged drum I think.
In hindsight I should have checked it out thoroughly and trusted my instinct before it developed into a breakage, that damage cost $1000 of parts plus about $500 labour at the shop.
I really cant tell you what to do, that is your call.

Re: 04 Crim Top gear problems
Im gunna try the linkage and rod adjustments, do a trackday see what happens, ill stop using 6th that day if it reoccurs and get the internals looked at, hopefully its the small things
